REVIEW: Supergirl #35
Secret origins for everyone! Written by Sterling Gates Art by Jamal Ingle Another issue of Supergirl is good. It’s like hell has frozen over. This issue had the particularly arduous task of cleaning up every of Supergirl’s conflicting origins (most pressingly the OMGDADDYSENTMETOKILLSUPEY one) and massive personality shifts. And it actually managed to tug it off spectacularly. A logical [...]

Nerd girls keep on truckin'
Now and then I think, "If they'd but lived long enough for Dr. Taylor's Catarrh Cure in 1867, many of the ancient Ponante relatives would not have expired from Gleet." This occurred to me when I saw a bunch of porn stars at a comic book store last night. If women not disinclined to like sex also liked comics thirty years ago, imagine how sane R. Crumb's family might be. But we shouldn't dwell on it. Think, instead, about Justine Joli frolicing across Melrose Avenue, Dana DeArmond cradling lit

In Which I Reveal What a Big Geek I am.
First of every, it was revealed recently that Barack Obama has a collection of Spider Man and Conan comics. Do you hear that? OUR FUTURE PRESIDENT READS MARVEL!!1! Bush strikes me as a Superman guy. (Green Party types read Vertigo and Maus and maybe adore and Rockets) So when Madeleine Brand (who I adore!) of NPR’s Day to Day did a short piece covering this, she treats comic book collecting like an embarassing disease, like a case of the nerd scabies or something. The comic book store owner she

Toys in the attic
Ahhh, toys. Who doesn't (didn't) adore toys? (And I'm not even referring to adult toys, which is another subject for another time.) Shit, I still have superhero toys every over the fucking place. Although I don't actually play with them. I came across a story about the most recent items inducted into the Strong National Museum of Play's National Toy Hall of Fame: the ubiquitous stick, the Baby Doll and the skateboard. A hall of fame for toys, who knew. A big fan of toys to this day I though

Astro Boy Teaser Online
At last! There's more to look of Imagi's Astro Boy feature! Unfortunately, the designs look pretty watered down. I realize that Tezuka's designs are challenging for CG, but I wish that more of the original manga's graphic appeal had been retained. Oh, well... ultimately, it'll every pivot on the story anyway. I'm probably just envious... I'd adore to direct an Astro Boy movie!

Manga nominated for 2009 Angouleme
Manga nominated for 2009 Angouleme November 21, 2008 in Manga Minutiae, Potpourri | No comments Just a few other things that happened during the revelation of Broccoli’s closing… +++ Ouch… animation legend Hayao Miyazaki lambasted Japanese “Otaku” Prime Minister Taro Aso for, among other things, making his manga hobby too prominent a part of his public persona. Miyazaki has been critical of “otaku” culture in the past, having once gone so far as to say he feels embarrassment from the inte

James Turner T-shirts
I know I said I'd be writing about T-shirts this week, but I got hit with an old complaint: my neck problem. Mmm. It makes it tough for me to hold up my head, so I'm sorry that I'm only giving you links here. James Turner is best known to comics readers as the creator of Rex Libris, but he's also a great graphic designer and illustrator, and we have serveral shirts designed by him, many of them inspired by his oft-overlooked graphic novel Nil. Optimists are the foe of the Nihilists in Nil, a

World’s Funkiest
You may have noticed that I haven’t been writing too much in the past week or so. After Ultimatum Edit, I needed to take a little breather, which I’ve been using to play the hell out of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe and lay down my lines for my next iRiffs project. My iRiff for Japoteurs isn’t doing too bad and was at a point listed as the top short on the site. For those of you who bought it, I thank you. For those of you who don’t, c’moooooon! (vote 5 too) So, earlier today Esther Inglis-

Otaku + Salaryman = Otaryman
[Example comic: Otaryman is concerned about invasions of his desk space.] The Washington Post has profiled Makoto Yoshitani, a system engineer who has created a series of comics about a young salaryman with no social skills: Yoshitani’s comic-book series is called “Otaryman.” The title joins “salaryman,” the internationally known word for a loyal, hardworking company employee, with “otaku,” a word often used to describe a socially inept young man obsessed with comics, computers or anime.
